PROS: - Inexpensive solution to power a variety of 12V equipment. - Does not overheat under moderate use.
CONS: - Cheap packaging. - The adapter-head cable is way too short.
SUMMARY: OK, so when I opened it up, the unit was just in a paper box with NO plastic bag to cover it, and so, it was dusty and dirty, which screams CHEAP from the manufacturer! Why not put it into a closed plastic bag that costs like... nothing is beyond me. :( The cable with the adapter head is VERY short. I could have imagined a decent enough cable length for it for more comfortable usage, which again screams CHEAP! Since I only tested it out on a mini mobile radio, it worked fine, but that unit only draws about 2.5Amps, so I'm not sure how will it handle heavier devices that require its max output capabilities. I think it's best not to try it and stay below the 8Amp mark.
So, if you don't care about such issues as I described and only need a power supply that works, then just dust it off from all the dirt and place it close to your device, and it will work. How well and how long? I have no idea, but usually items that scream CHEAP, do so for a reason, if you know what I mean... :-/
After this power supply gets AC power it takes a full 4 seconds before the DC power flows. I was using this to power LED lights on a switch. How would you like to turn on a light switch in a dark room and wait 4 seconds for the lights to come on? I have other power supplies that take only 1 second. Do not purchase this power supply if you are going to be using it in a similar situation. Also, the build quality feels cheap. It is a big hollow plastic box with with the components inside. It does not feel like the enclosure and the internal electronics were thoughtfully engineered to be size efficient.
Bought this to power my 12 volt cigarette lighter tire inflator. The amperage isn't listed on the inflator, just that it's 300 PSI. The unit delivered plenty of power to the inflator, which inflated a tire about 25% down up to 32 pounds of pressure in about three minutes. The unit seems solid, is quite heavy, has a heavy-duty 47" power cord and a 10" cord on the cigarette lighter receptacle.
Wanted to use this with an portable air compressor to inflate tires and not have to plug into my car (for maneuverability around my garage sake). This item fit the bill. Haven't really taxed it much but was able to perform in very cold conditions. Solid product. I would definitely check the ratings for whatever device(s) you plan to use as I've read other complain about not having enough power. This one is rated 10amp.
It works well, just don't expect it to pump out it's advertised 120 watts. In my testing using a [definitely not calibrated] hobby grade LiPo charger, it would hold 12.2 volts up to about 6.2 amps. Pulling any more than that, the voltage suddenly drops below 10v and the charger would shut off. ***It should also be noted that the included cigarette lighter caused a lot more voltage droop - Once I cut that off and soldered a better connector on there, the voltage held 12.2 very well until as said above, going above somewhere around 6 amps.
This charger has one MAJOR problem that could result in fire/shock. At the junction of the cord to the wall plug, the outer insulation was not well connected to the plug, and the outer jacket has retracted, exposing the inner wires. See photo. No, I did not unplug it by pulling the wire, only unplugged by pulling the plug directly. IF the inner wire insulation were to become damaged, this could be a big problem.
I missed the window to return it. I am hoping the seller contacts me.
Otherwise, I have (very carefully) tested it by running a light that has an auto plug, overnight. It does not overhead, and besides the plug defect, seems fine. If not for the plug defect, I would have given it 5 stars. Also, we bought two of these, and the other one is great (5 stars), which is why I averaged it out to 3 stars.
