That said, while this controller works perfectly and can even sync with a PC providing you have a Bluetooth receiver on hand - an extra five bucks essentially nets you a perfectly worthwhile wireless controller for PC gaming - I have to admit that it's fairly pricey. It works flawlessly and could maybe stand to have less clicky shoulder buttons if I had to be nitpicky; but the Pro Controller's biggest drawback is its price tag. As a Canadian, paying a hundred bucks after taxes for something I can pick up in wired form or out of a third party for a fraction of the price hurts more than a little. You do pay for a sense of quality and for what has to be the best battery life in a wireless controller in the industry - this puppy essentially packs a 3DS' battery pack on its own, netting you a spectacular forty consecutive hours on a single charge - but it still does sting quite a bit.
I do highly recommend it, but I'd also advise that you look for the Horipad or for any other similar offerings on the market. They might be wired, but you'll essentially get the same form factor and ease of use for a fraction of the Pro Controller's cost. That said, if wireless capability and its consequent compatibility as a PC gamepad is a game-changer for you, then odds are you'll be amply satisfied.
Despite the price this is not up to snuff with what I consider actually matters as a gamer.
WHY ARE THE TRIGGERS SET UP AS NORMAL BUTTONS?!? How are these going to allow me to play any decent racing or driving game if the throttle will be on or off? At least use pressure sensitive buttons so there is a chance in the future should quality racing games make it to the switch.
I see this as either a huge limiting factor or a chance for the company to release a new more expensive controller with the option, that will be annoying because I bought this and now it’s gonna be superseded by a slightly better product.
Now if I want a controller that’s basically ps3/Xbox 360 era on the switch it will likely cost an additional $30 on top of this things price tag
This Pro Controller is Wireless and includes a USB Cable to allow you to charge the device when required. You can definitely play and charge the Controller at the same time however the cord is not significantly long enough; which would require you to sit closer to the Dock and TV screen. Pairing the Controller is automatic and you choose directly from the On Screen Menu which Controller you wish to use. The amazing part, you can swap between Controller and Joy Cons at any point during your Game. This is a fantastic feature with the Nintendo Switch Console as well as the simplicity to toggle between Controllers.
As described, the battery life is for approximately 40 hours and it is recommended to charge this Controller prior to using it for the first time. I'm in the habit of always charging my Controller as soon as I shut down my Switch. This is no different when charging a Tablet or Smartphone; to keep is charged at all times.
There was no lapse or delay when using this Controller in full game action. The buttons and layout is beautifully arranged for the Player; I really applaud Nintendo because the buttons are raised and easy to press and maneuver. Once I took it out from the box and held it; I automatically became accustomed to the feel and look of the Controller. In addition, I was able to fully recognize the button configuration without having to look down after a very short period of time.
Again, for any entry level or Hard Core Gamer; this is a definite must, you need for your Nintendo Switch. It will solidify your Gaming experience and make it more enjoyable.
Bonus - it comes with a USB-C to USB cable, so you can plug it into your switch's doc and have it charge when not in use.
Button placement could have been better. Having the plus and minus so close to the share and home buttons means you’ll be hitting them more than usual. At least for me my thumbs naturally reach to the home and share buttons instead of the other two. The d-pad is terrible. Very mushy and prone to false inputs, I wouldn’t recommend this controller if you’re mostly into 2D fighters and platformers. At best it’s on par with a 360 d-pad, my experience is it’s much worse. Not something you would expect from Nintendo considering their history of amazing d-pads.
At $90 Nintendo should have hit this one out of the park. It’s a pricey controller with an outstanding battery but other than that it’s really hard to justify shelling out that kind of money. If you must have all Nintendo products you won’t go wrong with it but if your looking for price to performance go with something else like the SN30 Pro+ series from 8BitDo.
The joy-cons would be fine for a slower-paced game, but I find it awkward to play Breath of The Wild without this thing.
Completely essential for any Switch owner, in my opinion.
The Pro-Controller is one thing and one thing only, a great controller. The buttons and sticks are more precise and give you much more control over the game. The grip is better and more comfortable and the layout is simply more intuitive. Playing some games almost felt like an entirely new experience as the added precision from the Pro-Controller made accomplishing some feats much easier than they ever were with the Joy-Con's. If you plan on any serious gaming I feel the Pro Controllers are a must. The Joy-Cons are serviceable and fine for some games, but the added control from the Pro Controller is worth it.
• Much more precision and control with the Pro Controller over the Joy-Cons
• 40 hour battery life vs the joy cons 6
• Much more comfortable in the hand than the Joy-Cons
• Can be played while wired to the Switch Consol
• Slightly cheaper than the Joy-Cons
• The Joy cons are essentially two controllers, where the Pro Controller is only one
• Heavier than the Joy-Cons. However, I felt this added weight actually helped with the comfort
• No motion tracking or other functionality that the Joy-Cons have
I would say unless you need 2 more controllers, or are replacing the Joy-Cons, go with the Pro Controller. Head to head in some games like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, the player using the Pro Controller would have an advantage over the one using the Joy-Cons. The Pro is much more precise, comfortable and easier to use.
The controller is overpriced though. If you play the Switch almost exclusively in handheld mode then don't bother with this controller. Even when docked, I've used the joy con grip for months without any issue. If you really want to enhance your gaming experience with the switch in docked mode, then you might want to consider investing in this controller.
Returned it and will be looking elsewhere.
The controller is quite expensive when compared with other controllers, but it's definitely worth it.
I could not stand using a joy con controller, or using a 3rd party pro controller for extended gaming sessions.
Would recommend this as an essential for why switch owner, only need one for 1st person if budget is limited.
