If you've gotten to this point in the series, you're likely a fan and will buy the book no matter how it's reviewed. I bought book 5 & 6 at the same time, otherwise I would have stopped with this one. The author seems to be trying to learn from previous books, which I applaud, but the characters are too far gone to be saved, I think.

The magic system is still so basic that it's not interesting to the story at all. I keep hoping the author will develop it, but no luck so far.

All of this lost combat knowledge should never have been lost. What 13 year old apprentice wouldn't try to throw a fireball if they had the power? How could such simplistic combat magic have ever been lost in the first place when teens are so creative and curious by nature? It's a central theme and important to the story and the standing of the major characters, but it's so flawed logically that it doesn't stand up.

Some of the characters are becoming very unlikable for me. Little character flaws in children become very annoying as they age through the story and those flaws are never addressed. Sura in particular, has become a large part of the reason I'm done with this series. It's great to be an independent woman, but it's taken to an extreme with her. It's to a point that she's so determined to do everything herself that she's ungrateful to others who try to help with anything, particularly Mik. It's not a gender issue to anyone but Sura. She really has no redeeming qualities as a character for me, but you can't ignore her because she's central to the story.

The Raso and Darin story lines... yeah, whatever.

I won't bother with a review of book 6, though I've already read it. The problems I spoke of here are as bad or worse in the next book. I might try some of Larry's books in the future, but I'm done with this series. It's not even worth $1 anymore.

3.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas could have been more or combined with the next book 23 de diciembre de 2014

I have really enjoyed the characters and story line up to this point. To me and this is my opinion, this story felt forced. First, it was very short, the dialogue was uninspired and the actual action was mediocre at best. Nothing in this story really challenged my emotional attachment to the story or characters like the previous version did. I am waiting for the next book and will purchase it. My hope is the next one is longer (worth the price of admission) and moves the series along otherwise I don't see an end to this series.

This one seemed a bit darker than the previous four installments, and not only because much of it takes place in the absolute darkness of the Nightwalk. The war game angle of the story proved exciting, and the characters of Mik and Sura continue to flesh out and grow, which is nice. A good bridge to the next book. If you've enjoyed the series, you'll likely enjoy this read, too!

I really enjoy these series, and this book was no exception. All the books are fairly short and in print probably could have been combined in fewer volumes. For the Kindle read, though, they are very nice, fun and quick to read. I enjoy the author's imagination and writing style and am looking forward to the next installment!

I enjoyed this book. It seemed a bit more serious than the earlier books but it still was good. This book also wrapped up a couple of subplots quite nicely.
