Sadly, this performs no better (probably a little worse) at cooling than the unit it was replacing. I figured that given the age i'd see a big boost but this didn't pan out. In addition to the poor performance, this is MUCH noisier when the compressor is running. Any time the compressor is running it lets off an incredibly unpleasant and labored hum which is bad enough on its own, but the vibration from that seems to make every internal component rattle as well.
The chassis is incredibly concerning as well - the condenser, as delicate as it is, is COMPLETELY exposed - this fact is not apparent from the pictures. Speaking of the picture... that black grate on the back right corner is a joke - mine arrived dislodged and I found it difficult to keep on when inserting into the wall sleeve the gauge is thinner than that of a wire coat hanger. The plastic components also have an incredibly cheap feel - I highly doubt these will withstand normal use for more than a few years.
As others have mentioned - the packaging is woefully inadequate for shipment via UPS/FedEx etc. and this was one of my big concerns before buying via Amaon, but local options for thru-wall units are very few and very expensive. Fortunately for me, when this arrived there were only a few condenser fins bent. There's only 1/2" of styrofoam sheet protecting it - a slight pucture or crushed corner in transit to the left rear corner would destroy this unit.
If you can swing the extra 100 or so for an equivalent from a big-box home improvement store - you're probably better off.
**update 05/2018:
Noise and performance improved considerably after a few days of use... and nearly a year later w/ periodic, hard use it is doing ok and in line with what i would expect. I Still have some concerns with the overall build quality but i have revised my rating as it's doing the job well enough, and I think it's only fair to place more weight on performance when judging.

SIDE NOTE: I did call LG to see if they could do something about this (I had read that LG is notorious for bad wiring and that a simple wiring connection in the panel could fix the issues). They got all of my information (including the model # and model information - I corrected the guy on the phone 3 times that it is a 9800 BTU unit, not a 10,000 BTU) and they sent a repairman out. He walked in, took one look and said that he wasn't allowed to touch the unit because it's under 10,000 BTU's. So, LG is not helpful at all when it comes to their products. Glad I took the day off from work to be home for the repairman...
I've now returned the a/c outright, but kept the functioning unit.
However, the working A/C is now starting to have issues just a couple of months after installing it. The compressor keeps vibrating at random intervals causing a loud metallic clanking sound. It's now woken us up several times in the middle of the night. I'll be contacting LG to see if they'll do anything about this sense it is now outside of Amazon's range of return. But, I know how that went last time. yay... (Will try and update here when I've talked to LG).
With the knowledge I have now, I wish I had never purchased these units and will definitely NEVER be purchasing an LG A/C ever again.
ANOTHER SIDE NOTE: When returning to Amazon I was initially charged a restocking fee citing that the unit was damaged (Amazon graciously reversed this charge and I've now received a full refund). They didn't say what the damage was (other than a non-functioning product), but, I did notice on all 3 of the units I received that the black metal grate on the back was bent (this is my only guess as to physical damage). This is due to the fact that #1 - it's very flimsy metal, and #2 the packaging. There's nothing in the packaging to keep this metal from bending. A slight shift during shipping and delivery would easily bend this. So, if you order this (and I hope you don't) check it when you receive it and take a picture and immediately send it to amazon. That way if you have to return it, you've already made a note of it with them.
Save yourself the hassle, spend a little more and buy a Frigidaire or something better. You won't regret it.

The awful instructions will not accommodate all wall sleeves. Ours are 31 years old and are much taller than any of the newer styles. The instructions do not outline WHY you should place a small piece of foam here or there, instead opting for tiny diagrams and poor English. Explaining a little bit of the why is very helpful to those of use who are mechanically inclined. Only after getting all the foam in place inside the sleeve did I realize the new LG is 4”+ shorter than the wall sleeve. What a pain.
It looks like they designed the buttons to be used while looking down at them. Our unit is mounted high on the wall and you must hold the remote up as high as you can and angle it downward to get it to work. The bottom of the temperature setting readout is obscured because it’s angled upward.
Overall it is a quiet unit. The interior fan is loud on speed 3, but that’s expected. The compressor makes a thud when it turns on or off but is otherwise quiet in operation. The front grate rattles intermittently because it’s a poor design and cheap plastic. The clean filter light illuminates every 2ish weeks because it counts 250 hours of unit on time, not running time. The coarse dust filter hasn’t been dirty yet. In energy saver mode it may not run the compressor for hours if the room temperature is acceptable. The fan comes on briefly every 3 minutes to check if the room needs more cooling while in energy saver mode. This is nice because it’s not wasting electricity but also annoying because it’s always there as a reminder of how long you’ve been lying there at night trying to fall asleep.
Temperature control is fine. Setting it to energy saver and 69°F renders a high of 74°F and a low of 72°F. This very acceptable since I don’t want it cooler than 72° anyway. The unit pumps out cold, cold air and the fan moves plenty of that cold air.
Overall it works well and is relatively quiet. It had given us no problems for the whole summer. It needs better instructions, a tiltable control surface and higher quality exterior components to garner that fifth star.

I live in a one bdrm apt in NYC...there are two "thru-the-wall" spots...living room and bdrm. But, I didn't want 2 a/c's or one in the bdrm. This one did the trick in the living room. When it came, my INDOOR temp was almost 90 degrees...no kidding. After "I" installed it, and running it "full blast" for an hour, the temp dropped to 82, no humidity per se. 10 mins after that, a full thunderstorm hit...no problem
Subsequently, I adjusted the temp to 79 degrees, Energy Saver Mode. Happy as a clam. I don't "hear" it at all.
SIDE NOTE: While not "directly" related to the A/C, the mode of delivery matters (at least in my case). I first ordered from Walmart, different A/C, wrong voltage, BUT! when FedEx delivered,[TWO guys & a dolly!] they "dumped" it at street level...laughing. I'm 62 yrs old faced with "pushing" an 80 lb A/C up a flight of stairs. I did it...barely. When ONE UPS guy via Amazon came, he had a dolly, came right to my door, no "argument" and with a smile...he got a $20 tip. With my blessing.

After a big search, as we already have a wall sleeve and we are not allowed to put a window unit in our apartment, we end up deciding on this one as it is 115V and fits to our 27 inch wall-sleeve with the special frame. We spent awful amount of time to figure out it this will fit perfectly to our already present wall sleeve, in the end, yes, it fits really well.
The package arrived on time and good shape. I found the instructions for installation not helpful at all, super confusing. we had to go over them multiple times to figure out which scenario of installation ( A,B, or C) to follow for our particular sleeve... in the end we followed C I think but the instructions could have been definitely more helpful and easier to follow. Other than that the installation was pretty simple, basically you just put the A/C in to the sleeve with a couple of foams under and around to insulate.
Insulation is super important especially for the winter. I like the fact that the product came with insulation foams, so we were able to put it under the frame - it seems good for now, we will see if there are holes when the winter arrives...We also bought couple of extra foams, just to make sure we cover all holes.
As we use this A/C in our bedroom, we found it quite noisy, especially at night. When the compressor kicks in as you go under 72F, it is quite loud in the middle of the night.
Other than that it is cooling the room very well, and I like the fact that it has couple of modes, cool - dry - fan and energy saver. We use the energy saver to keep the room at a certain temperature. The remote control is also very helpful - to turn on/off in the middle of the night.
Overall I like this product and recommend it for a small size room, if you have 27 inch wall sleeve.
