Aside from the tedium of the hours of platforming and retracing your steps, I do really love the story and the characters. I love that the antagonist makes a lot of mistakes in her judgement, and it's up to you to not only defeat a great nemesis but also to put past errors right. I find the story very engaging in that way, and the characters are pretty colorful in their personalities and interesting to listen to their stories. The voice acting is really enjoyable and there is a HUGE abundance of characters (which does have some major drawbacks...). They tried to be very inclusive, but not overly preachy, by having some LGBTQ individuals and characters from all walks of life; it was pretty fascinating, I have to admit. The game treats such characters' sexual preferences as parts of their personality, not the defining characteristic, if that makes sense.
My biggest complaint is the absolute lack of combat, which had gotten me so excited to buy this game in the first place (new turn-based RPGs are increasingly rare afterall). But you do very little battling; each dungeon/town/antfarm has only a few enemies throughout, and once you beat them you won't see them again for a long time, until you come back to do more jumping. The battles take no time at all, even the tougher enemies don't take more than a minute to defeat; you can pretty much button mash your way through any brawl, which doesn't feel rewarding in the slightest. You get plenty of characters to recruit, but because you have so many characters to choose from and so few enemies to fight, you won't get to really enjoy them (aside from engaging their side quests and in conversation). Honestly, I was collecting so many side characters that I wound up using some only in one or two battles, just to see what they were like, and never used them again, it's just stupid how unbalanced and mismanaged the battling in this game really is. The battling element to this game is so marginal and insignificant, for example, so many of your battles will simply end because the enemy will fall over a ledge, I'm not kidding, cancelling out the battle mode; that made me sooooo mad, because I relished every battle there was, and it just felt insulting everytime it happened. There is even one enemy type toward the end of the game that I never managed to defeat because it slipped off the edge of every cliff on which you found it before I could properly finish a battle with it. What a joke. Even the boss battles are not really boss battles, as they add more platforming elements/jumping into the mix, switching between the two modes to a nauseating degree, I found it very unsatisfying, to say the least. Also, just one more nitpick, although the monster designs are really neat, they do a ton of palette swapping in the game, so you wind up fighting I think no more than 10 unique monsters (not including the bosses) which are just recycled over and over. This isn't the 90's, palette swapping is lazy, especially when you already skimp on the actual monster battling to begin with.
For as much as I love the story, the humorous and memorable characters, the dialogue and artwork, the gameplay is an unbalanced wreck to me; it would be absurdly short if not for having to go over and over and over the same antfarms just to progress the tiniest amount in the story.
Indivisible is a beautiful game, but beauty isn’t the only reason that makes this game stand out. It is the the mixture of RPG and side scrolling action, topped with a weird funny story and on the point perfect controls, makes this game a very tasty treat to gamers out there looking for something new and refreshing.
