Imara’s return-to-origin in her early twenties is fraught with hardship. Kenya is no place for short skirts (or the women in them) and signs of social progression and autonomy are nowhere to be found. What’s more, she is a foreigner among the prevailing majority, doesn’t speak Swahili, and can’t seem to escape developing world problems. Of course there’s Hosea, the American love she left in search of identity and purpose. Imara succumbs to depression, causing her parents' to sign her up as a volunteer at a Maasai Mara children’s orphanage. But the savanna offers no refuge. Having resolved that suicide-by-lion is her only way out, dark, supernatural occurrences derail her plans and result in a new purpose.
