~~ A YA fantasy novel ~~

Vincent has always known his fathers’ secret: they are both vampires, escaped from a fighting camp where they were forced to combat the demons that come to Earth from another dimension through a portal.

He’s also known he was special, brought into the world by his mother’s magic at the cost of her life. It gives him the strength, speed and acute senses of vampires without their weaknesses, a combination unheard of.

And he’s known that both facts were to be kept secret at all cost, lest his fathers be sent back to fight an endless battle, or he be studied like a lab rat for the rest of his life.

So, during his junior year in high school, when he receives an anonymous text message that hints someone knows, he’s determined to figure out who it is and how to keep them quiet before his fathers find out and decide they should all run and hide. This task, however, might be easier if his best friend didn’t suddenly show a deep interest in vampires, demons and fighting camps… and if the girl he has a crush on didn’t distract him so much…

I want to start off by saying that I received this book for free for my honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book in any way.

This book is very good, I was a little disappointed that it wasn’t drawn out a little longer. It takes place over about a weeks period, so as attached as I got to the characters with all that she jam packed into that one week, I feel like they could have been a little more developed simply to make you want another book, to see how they continue in life.

It’s about a teenage boy in a unique situation; both of his fathers are vampires, and he is the son of a mage born by magic, which means that he has the strength, and speed of a vampire, but the lifespan of a human and non of the negatives of vampires. His fathers escaped a camp for vampires where they fight to protect humans from demons. In a nutshell Vincent (the 16 year old boy) not only has a school crush and Hockey to deal with, but also his dads secret; and when he receives a text that simply says “I know” his world turns upside down and inside out.

He starts to investigate the text, and then if things couldn’t get worse, even with his avoidance of the subject of vampires because of their secret, the paper that he is apart of for the school chooses that as the topic for the entire paper, not just one article. The book then gets real interesting and the confusion and climax ensues. You learn a lot in this “one week” about the characters, and you get attached. Once you get to the “field trip” part, get ready to not want to put the book down until you finish it.. it’s one jump to another to another and it climbs higher and higher until you reach the last couple of pages, then its drops, and everything falls into place. It does not leave you lacking at all in the end.

The characters are great, the story line too, if she did another one about these characters I would certainly read it, it was just too short for me. I wanted at least a month for the characters to develop and for people to get more attached.

**Thank you to Angela Yseult for providing me a digital ARC of this novel via NetGalley for the purposes of honest review.**

Demon World was a refreshing teen paranormal fantasy in many ways, but it did fall flat in others. I was really impressed with the world building and the mythology present in the story, particularly concerning how it sets itself so far apart from most other teen novels about vampires and demons by presenting vampires as the protectors of humanity. Overall the story was quite compelling and I found the writing to be immersive. I could never quite love it, though, because I was not interested in the main character or his voice. I felt too much of the narration was wasted on teen angst and overall I was never quite sure why Vincent needed to be the main character, since he didn't seem to matter all that much to the overall plot. I was also disappointed by the ending, as it felt sort of like a cop-out and was too clean for a book that had such a well-written build. It seemed like the entire story was the prelude to a really intense climax that never happened.
I would recommend to younger readers who enjoy paranormal fantasy, but I think the main character will be difficult for older readers to engage with.

Secrets have a way of coming out as a teenage boy finds out in this mesmerizing tale. Vincent has always kept the secrets of his family, he knew he had to in order to keep them safe, but he’s also curious about his mother and the things that his fathers won’t talk about.

This steady paced and smooth flowing plot keeps readers intrigued throughout with a fascinating world, captivating characters and drama and suspense. The author describes the scenes with well written details that capture the imagination and arouses the curiosity. The strong compelling characters are easily understood and grab the reader’s attention from the very beginning and tensions building throughout the story regarding Vincent’s secret.

Vincent has a crush on a young girl at school and after a fight with his best friend he comes to the conclusion that she is the one who knows his secret, which sets a series of events in motion that could prove disastrous for Vincent and his dads, so when his questions and investigating actually do lead to the unthinkable, his dad’s becoming imprisoned again, he does whatever it takes to get them back.

The story is fascinating and takes place in an intriguing world, and it combines typical teenage boy drama with what that teenage boy would have to go through to keep major secrets not only about his fathers, but also about his self. This of course creates lots of drama and emotional turmoil for the young man. The reader can’t help but get further drawn into the story with every little tidbit revealed about his fathers’ life and empathize with Vincent and how he deals with the burden. I enjoyed the story, even though it’s not really my type of book because it is more of a drama with paranormal elements than a kick ass paranormal or paranormal romance.

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. I was not compensated in any way.

This is a story that is told from the main character’s point of view – told in first person.

Vincent is a typical high school student who just so happens to be a little different. And that becomes quite apparent by the time chapter one is over. It also becomes apparent how tough it is to hide those differences from others. This story also shows that prejudice still exists – even in the future. It also makes you wonder if Vincent’s world is something that will come to be in the future. Just like in our own history, the possibility of change can turn things around for the better.

Angela shows her readers how tough it is to be Vincent. I loved this book because we get to see how frustrating life is for him. His life is actually like that of other teenagers, which to me makes this more contemporary then, paranormal. And it’s a great family story even though the family dynamic is slightly different.

Just because this is written for the Young Adult reader doesn’t mean that you can’t give this book a chance. One reason this is a YA is because there is no sex and I don’t know that I would have liked it as much if those scenes existed. I recommend that you add this book to your library.

There were so many fantastic things happening in this book. Demons have opened portals to earth. Vampires sign up to fight them and keep them from taking over the world. Camps were built close to the portals and that's where vampires lived. Mages kept the portals contained so that the demons couldn't escape while fighting vampires. The world thought this agreement with the vampires worked very well. Vampires signed up to fight for a certain amount of time and were supposed to be discharged from service when that time was up but that was not how it was happening.

Vincent, with a mage for a mother, a vampire for a father, was born of magic. His parents met in one of the earlier mentioned camps. When she discovered that the vampires were being mistreated, she snuck Michael and Lucas out. His mother died in child birth and he was raised by his two vampire dads, Michael and Lucas. They lived in secrecy ever since. What happens when the secret is no longer a secret?

The story line was genius! It grabbed me in the beginning and didn't let go until the last page and still I wanted more. A different and refreshing twist on vampires. Outstanding YA Paranormal! I am definitely a fan of Angela Yseult! I am not normally a YA reader but this author has such an amazing way with words, that I forget that it's YA. I can't wait to see what's next.
