I bought this album a few months back and, to put it simply it's been in my CD player almost constantly. Like Oxygene and Equinoxe, Chronologie fits together as one single piece of music divided into eight parts, each as different as possible from the one before it. I read reviews on Amazon, mostly favorable, one of which remarks that this CD would serve as an excellent soundtrack to a work of fiction, be it a story, film or video game. I can definitely understand and agree with his comments. In fact much of Jarre's music sounds to me like good material to use in video games. Chronologie in particular has, for me at least, a sound very fitting to, say, a Castlevania style game. Not necessarily creepy but certainly grand and, in its way, prophetic. Part one is a triumphant opening through and through. Track two puts me in mind of an intense battle, either between two powerful individuals or two massive armies. Track three is a quiet, almost dreamy sounding one, though not without its grandure. Just take a listen to the electric guitar about halfway through. Things pick up for most of the rest of the album, part four being particularly danceable. I also understand that Jarre set himself up with some new synthes for this album, but having no knowledge of synthesizers myself I couldn't identify them. But this album in particular has got me intrigued by the idea of learning to compose myself. I'm actually considering, thanks to this and the six other Jarre albums I own, buying a small collection of synthes of my own if and when finances permit, and making a hobby of it. Certainly I probably wouldn't be able to afford any of the synthes Jarre uses but I've seen some good ones at fairly reasonable prices.
This album is often haled as Jarre's last truly great album, and I must say I agree. I loved Oxygen 7-13, but it didn't quite capture the same brilliance of the prior Oxygene, nor of Chronologie, which in my opinion is just about as close as any of Jarre's later albums ever ccame to the greatness of Oxygene and Equinoxe. Needless to say I wholeheartedly recommend this album to any fan of Electronica, or even anybody who's just looking for a new and intensive listening experience. I'm not a big fan of electronica myself and yet I loved Jarre's early work.
