CAUSE/EFFECT: METALLICA revisits the lead up and release of Metallica's iconic and career defining release METALLICA (or "The Black Album" as it's commonly known. In this book, author Chris Akin remembers the build up to the release of METALLICA, the way in which it divided the once loyal Metallica fanbase, and the way this release changed the way that commercial radio was programmed. Featuring stores of the industry as well as personal memories from rock critic and radio personality Chris Akin, CAUSE/EFFECT: METALLICA paints a clear picture of just how this monumental release changed the way people thought about heavy metal, what was good on the radio, and the divided nature in which this album immediately effected the band themselves.

Biografía del autor

Following the success of Chris Akin's first book, the tell-all memoir about his divorce and the death of his father called LITTLE VICTORIES: A TALE OF DIVORCE, DEBAUCHERY AND FINDING HAPPINESS, he has returned to his heavy metal roots with the first book in a series of books called "Cause/Effect." A career rock critic and radio personality, Chris has unique perspective into the worlds of hard rock and heavy metal because of the amount of access to the biggest bands in the world over a 20 year career in the business. Chris has owned a music publications including MUSIC'S BOTTOM LINE Magazine and PITRIFF, as well as being a radio personality on THE CLASSIC METAL SHOW, THE METAL SHOW and MIDWEEK MAYHEM.

First up, this 'book' is little more than an extended blog post, so the price tag of over $3 is way over-priced. This is a dollar purchase at best.

That said, I'm a fan of Chris Akin's internet radio show 'The Classic Metal Show and I appreciate his brutal honesty. And his personal reminiscences of this album took me back to being 14 and hearing 'Metallica' for the first time and having my life changed.

I disagree with Akin in two areas:

1) I always thought Metallica played 'Sad But True' way too FAST live, not too slow.

2) 'My Friend of Misery' was always my favourite 'deep cut' from the record. And it was groundbreaking not only because they allowed Jason to take center stage, but they even gave him a writing credit!

Also, an essential accompaniment to this is the brilliant 'Classic Albums' episode. Especially the deleted scene where Jason Newstead talks about the creation of 'My Friend of Misery' and his frustration with his role in the band is clear.

When I first saw this documentary I picked up on that immediately. But it wasn't until a decade later that Newstead actually revealed it was on that same day when they filmed that show that he decided he was going to leave Metallica.

Cause/Effect: Metallica won't go down as the definitive last word on Metallica's "Black Album," but that's not the intent here. Instead, the book examines in brief the period leading up to the release of the album and then after the album was released, author Chris Akin recalls the reaction from longtime Metallica fans as they heard the new material for the first time. Akin wraps in his personal reflections (and experiences with the band) as a Metallica fan when examining the album and that's really what makes this an engaging read. For anyone who has ever called themselves a "Metallica fan," Akin's words will ring true -- these are the discussions that you've had with fellow Metallica friends over beers, in the parking lot before a Metallica concert, etc. Track by track, Akin takes a look at the "Effect" that the Metallica album had on the band's career from that point forward and it's a fair and balanced look that examines the impact of the "Black Album" both critically and from the fan's perspective. As the opening shot from a planned series of similarly themed releases under the "Cause/Effect" name, I'll look forward to additional volumes. A good quick read that is also well-written. Would love to see a full-on Metallica book from Akin someday, but for now, I'll put in my vote for Load/Reload and .....And Justice For All.

I say if you love or hate this album, buy this book! A much debated album, Chris gives you his thoughts and shows the divide among fans. My favorite part is how Chris fuses the release with his life at the time. Especially debating the album at the local record store. I spent many a day doing that with music and miss that connection to people you can never get with Facebook. Sadly younger people will never have this experience. But the book brings you there.

This book is an easy read. Delving into the "controversial" and career making 5th Metallica, Mr Akin gives a personal insite to what was one of the most anticipated albums of 1991. Mr. Akin is clearly a fan but doesn't have blinders on to prevent an honest account of the songs and reactions to them from him and his friends. I hope there are more!

This is a quick read covering the background information of the Black Album and a song by song review as seen and heard through the eyes and ears of Chris Akin. Time to scroll the Ipod back to that album and take another listen!
